RV Solar Connection offers five models of solar charge controllers manufactured by Morningstar. Each one was specifically chosen by us and is ideally suited to its unique application.
The Morningstar Sunsaver is the world's leading small solar controller
for consumer applications. It includes
standard features and capabilities not found in any other small photovoltaic
controller. The Sunsaver's advanced design delivers outstanding fully
automatic performance and value. The Sunsaver uses pulse width modulation
(PWM) constant voltage charging which regulates the charge voltage to the
battery and tapers the charge to full PWM as the battery reaches full
charge.
As with most solar controllers the Sunsaver prevents reverse current discharging night. The Sunsaver line of charge controllers will not charge a battery that has dropped below six volts, so it won't bring a battery back from the dead. The Sunsaver has a full 5 year warranty and a 15 year life expectancy.
The Sunsaver in an inexpensive solar charge controller that can be installed for a customer on a tight budget or is not interested in having a digital display to monitor the array's output or the batteries state of charge. Sunsavers are a great option for installation in small campers and camper vans.
Morningstar’s Sunsaver Duo™ is an advanced
pulse width modulation (PWM) two battery controller for RV’s and boats
. Rated for
25 amps at 12 volts DC, this product will charge two separate and isolated
batteries at the same time, such as a "house" and an cranking battery,
or
two separate RV Battery banks based
on user selectable priorities. This controller also includes a backlit
remote meter which may be mounted in or on a wall, and displays digital and
pictorial status information about the solar power system.
A remote temperature sensor and a PC meter bus adapter are available as options. The remote temperature sensor measures the battery temperature and adjusts the charge voltage accordingly. The PC meter bus adapter allows the user to download charge data to a pc or laptop. Requires a software download.
We don't install many Sunsaver Duo's™ but it is an excellent RV solar controller for those who need to charge two battery banks. The only thing we don't like about the controller is the colors on the face of the display. The SunSaver Duo™ has a 5 year factory warranty.
Morningstar’s SunSaver MPPT solar controller with
TrakStar Technology™ is an advanced maximum power
point tracking (MPPT) battery charger for off-grid photovoltaic (PV)
systems. The controller features a smart tracking algorithm that maximizes
the energy harvest from the photovoltaic array and also provides load
control to prevent over discharge of the battery.
The SunSaver MPPT is well suited for both professional and consumer PV
applications. Its charging process has been optimized for long battery life
and improved system performance. The Sunsaver MPPT is epoxy encapsulated for
environmental protection, may be adjusted by the user via four settings
switches or connection to a personal computer, and has an optional RM1 remote
meter and battery temperature sensor.
Key Features and Benefits include: Maximizes Energy Harvest with peak efficiency of over 97% with virtually no power loss. Excellent performance at low solar insolation levels. Efficient MPPT tracking and four stage charging increases battery life.
The Morningstar MPPT charge controller is an excellent higher end controller for large arrays. As with all Morningstar solar controllers the MPPT has a 5 year factory warranty.
Morningstar's ProStar is now into its second generation
with added new features and protections using
highly
advanced technology. Morningstar's patented pulse width modulation (PWM)
charging algorithm has also been further optimized for longer battery life
and solar system performance.
The ProStar is fully automatic with a three position battery select to
charge gel, sealed and flooded batteries. The ProStar has four stages of
charging, full charge, PWM, float and equalize.
As with most solar controllers with built in computer chips, the ProStar
will not bring a dead battery back to life. The minimum operating voltage is
8 volts DC. This really won't be an issue until your deep cycle batteries
are wore out and can no longer hold a charge.
Morningstar’s SunKeeper solar controllers provides a low
cost regulated output directly from the solar
module
to maximize battery life in small solar power installations. The SunKeeper
is epoxy encapsulated and rated for outdoor use. By mounting the SunKeepr
directly to the module junction box and wiring through the junction box
knockout, the connection is weather-proof. This eliminates the need for an
additional housing for the controller.
The SunKeeper is available in a 6 amp or 12 amp version (both at 12 volts
DC). To withstand the high temperatures beneath the solar module, the
controller has been designed using extremely efficient power electronics and
is rated to 158°F. The SunKeeper is also certified for use in Class 1,
Division 2 hazardous locations, making it an ideal controller for marine
applications.
The Sunkeeper is a three stage solar charge controller that initially bulk charges the battery, then tapers to pulse width modulation mode as the battery nears peak charge. The final stage float charges the battery. A key feature of the SunKeeper is that it can recharge a totally dead battery with zero voltage.
The Sunkeeper is one of our lower cost, but highly reliable solar charge controllers. We use them on our portable solar battery charging systems and can be fitted to any Kyocera module that we stock for installation on any type of RV.
